L.A. 31 Vuelta de Acadiana on Schedule for this weekend!

Looks like we dodged on another hurricane this year for the Vuelta and we are set for some great Cycling action this weekend.
You may have noticed the cat 5 omnium single event entries except the TT have been closed. We were getting close to the 50 rider limit and did not want to turn away all 3 event entrants. Please feel free to sign up race day if there is room left for the category. There is no late fee associated with single event entries.
Online Registration closes tomorrow – Thurday June 30th at 5PM. Race day registration is still allowed but will incur a 10$ late fee.
Online registration: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=13402

The entire venue has changed this year, please go over the flyer and bible for race times and locations.
Please note the following sponsors that are making this race possible. Not only does it take loads of time, but cold hard cash. There is no cheap way around putting on these sanctioned events. Please keep our sponsors in mind when making your next purchase and thank them the next time you see them.

Americans at the 2011 Tour de France
Brent Bookwalter, BMC
Bookwalter, 27, is coming off a big season that saw him finish both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. The Michigan native rode to second place in the Stage 1 time trial at the 2010 Giro, no doubt the high point of his career. Bookwalter is a skilled time trialist -- in 2006 he was the U-23 U.S. time trial champion. He took fourth in the 2011 U.S. Time Trial Championship and ninth in the road race. Every rider on the BMC Racing team will work for Cadel Evans at this Tour, so watch for Bookwalter to pull his weight in the Stage 2 team time trial, for starters.
Tom Danielson, Garmin-Cervelo
Danielson could very well be Garmin-Cervelo's No. 2 rider. He' not only has pure speed on the flats but excellent climbing abilities. He took third in the grueling Tour of California earlier this year, and in the past he set climbing records up Mount Washington (New Hampshire) and Mount Evans (Colorado). Danielson placed ninth in the 2010 Vuelta a Espana, four years after finishing sixth. This is the 33-year-old's first Tour de France, but he probably won't show it.
Tyler Farrar, Garmin-Cervelo
Tyler Farrar is a pure sprinter in the most literal sense. He'll compete with HTC-Highroad's Mark Cavendish, Lampre's Alessandro Petacchi and others in both the sprint stages and perhaps the race for the green jersey. He returns to the Tour a year after withdrawing from the race because of a crash that left him with a broken wrist. It's also his first Grand Tour since his friend and training partner, Wouter Weylandt, was killed in a crash at the 2011 Giro. Farrar was too distraught over the incident and left the race early. Farrar won't matter in the general classification but he'll contend for stage wins in the first half of the race.
George Hincapie, BMC
A veteran who turned professional in 1994, Hincapie will be Evans' top lieutenant on the road. He'll be right next to his teammate on the flats and in the hills, and in the mountains Hincapie will keep up as best he can. Hincapie enters the Tour after placing second in the road race at U.S. Nationals. The last of his four Tour stage wins came in 2007 (prologue), while he placed 19th overall in 2009. The 2011 Tour is incredibly mountainous so only the top climbers will finish in the top 20; look for Hincapie to potentially crack the top 25.
Christian Vande Velde, Garmin-Cervelo
Vande Velde's recent Grand Tour history is riddled with bad luck. Crashes at the 2009 and 2010 Giro, along with another at the 2010 Tour, forced him to withdraw from each race. He broke the stretch of withdrawals by finishing 58th in the 2010 Vuelta, and earlier this year Vande Velde took fourth in the Tour of California. If he's able to stay on the bike, Vande Velde will serve as Garmin-Cervelo's top GC threat.
Danny Pate, HTC-Highroad
Pate, 32, is a new rider for HTC-Highroad this year. His role on the sprinter-focused squad is one of support, with Cavendish, Mark Renshaw, Craig Lewis, Marco Pinotti and others shouldering the load as the team's top riders. Referring to his season plan, Pate said on the HTC-Highroad Web site, "I'll be focusing again on team time trials and leadouts for sprinters, as well as getting a chance for myself occasionally in some individual time trials." This will most likely be the case at the Tour.
Tejay Van Garderen, HTC-Highroad
Arguably one of the top young riders in the world, Van Garderen, 22, enters the Tour after taking home the Best Young Rider's jersey at the Tour of California. He also happened to finish fifth overall in the race, not long after placing second at the Volta ao Algarve. Van Garderen could be a Grand Tour threat in years to come but for now he'll support HTC-Highroad in its quest to win the team title at the Tour.
David Zabriskie, Garmin-Cervelo
Zabriskie's strength is time trials, although he won't have many chances to employ his abilities at this race. Stage 2 is a team time trial -- in which Garmin will be a favorite -- while Stage 20 is an individual time trial. That's it. He's also a decent all-arounder; look to his second-place finishes at the 2009 and 2010 Tour of California, along with a third-place result in the 2009 Vuelta a Castilla y Leon. With the amount of climbing in this Tour, however, Zabriskie will play a role in only the time trials.
Chris Horner, RadioShack
Now in his 16th year of professional racing, Horner cannot be counted out; a 10th-place result at the 2010 Tour doesn't seem that much of a stretch this season either. The 39-year-old recently won the Tour of California ahead of teammate Levi Leipheimer, and followed that with second- and fourth-place finishes in the Tour of the Basque Country and the Volta a Catalunya. Clearly he's on a roll this season; can he maintain this momentum into the French Alps?
Levi Leipheimer, RadioShack
Leipheimer's pure strength is time trialing, as he finished third in the Beijing Olympics time trial in 2008. But since then, he's finished second in the Vuelta (2008), fifth in the Giro (2009) and 13th in the Tour (13th). He also took third in the Tour in 2007. Leipheimer may not win the overall title at this year's race, but RadioShack is very strong with him, Horner, Jani Brajkovic and Andreas Kloeden; can the squad out-hustle HTC-Highroad and win the team title?

Galibier and the "Pantani Forever" Monument

In a few days the Tour de France will start and this edition will celebrate the inclusion of the Galibier in the Tour 100 years ago. As part of the history of this mountain a new monument was inaugurated on Galibier on June 19th dedicated to Marco Pantani. It was on Galibier, on July 27, 1998, that Pantani made his ferocious attack against Jan Ullrich, then the yellow jersey, and relegated the German to nearly nine minutes in a day to pandemonium.
The "Pantani Forever" monument is located at 2,301 meters of elevation on Galibier, the point where Pantani began his attack.
The monument was created by Massimo Salvagno from stone from the Piedmonte region, from Luserna San Giovanni.

Tour de France iPhone App
Tour Schedule 2011 is a new iOS app (for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) that gives a run down of each day’s stage with notes, maps and more. The kicker is it lets you add any or all stages to your iCal to easily block off the time it’s airing so you won’t accidentally schedule things like work, school functions or special time with your sweetie.
Available in iTunes for $0.99 now.

World's most marketable athlete
World and Olympic 100 and 200 metre champion Usain Bolt has replaced NBA star LeBron James as the most marketable sportsman on the planet. That is the headline result from SportsPro’s second annual ranking of the world’s 50 most marketable athletes, published in the June issue of the magazine.
Athletes have been ranked according to their marketing potential over a three-year period. James drops to second in the list, with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo ranked third.
The list comprises the 50 athletes deemed by SportsPro to offer value for marketing money if signed today to a long-term global endorsement deal.
As the sports landscape has shifted over the last 12 months, so has the make-up of these unique rankings. Clearly, when evaluating ‘potential’, a degree of subjectivity is involved. Nevertheless, myriad resources were consulted and contacts nigh-on interrogated.
As was the case last year, the list has been designed and compiled to shed light on where the value might lie across the industry, and as a basis for discussion – both a snapshot of the moment and a three-year forecast.
This year’s list features 16 new entries but only five women. There are 19 Americans on the list, six Britons and, in all, representatives from 19 countries. 18 sports are represented, including seven racing drivers and seven basketball players. Six soccer players make the list.
Guess how many cyclists made the list....

Iron Mountain Half Ironman Triathlon
Lafayette and Precision Bikes was well represented at De Gray Lake this weekend by Double Down Dave Leblanc and his wife Amy. Both Amy and Dave have jumped into triathlon full force and now getting some results. Dave placed 3rd in his age group and Amy placed 2nd in her age group on what was a hot day in Arkansas. The swim was a non wet suit swim, a hilly bike ride and a super hot run. Congrats and way to go at it!
