Cajun Challenge Century

Come join us on Saturday, October 3, 2009, for the Cajun Challenge bicycle ride. The funds raised from Cajun Challenge bike ride will be divided among the sponsoring organizations. T.R.A.I.L.’s will use its proceeds to support the 25 miles of paved pathways proposed from downtown Lafayette to St. Martin Lake for families, bicycle riders, and other outdoor enthusiasts. The Cajun Cyclists will help sponsor a local racing team to help promote bicycling in Acadiana.
The ride will start at Magdelon Square in Abbeville.
From there,
riders will be able to pick a
25, 62, or 100 mile route.
This year’s route will take riders to the Islands. Not Virgin or St. Thomas but Cow, Forked and Pecan Islands. This will be the first time many of you make the trek south of Abbeville into the wilderness. Birdwatcher’s dream as you cruise between the rice fields. Do not feed the alligators!

Interbike

It is an unbelievable experience to roam the floor of Interbike!
Sights from the newest technology to legends of the cycling world! Such as Ernesto Colnago and Eddie Merckx. Several pro bikes are on display, Mark Cavendish, Fabio Cancellara, Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador and Rock Racing Team. Pictures will be uploaded this weekend, as the webmaster forgot to bring the USB cable...
Good things will come to those that wait. Right now we're getting ready to get a bite to eat, followed by watching the National Criterium Chapionships over at the Mandelin Bay.

Redman Triathlon; Race Report by Dodd Foreman

Redman Triathlon

Thought that I would write a few lines to share my experience at Redman with you guys. I’ll try to keep it short but you know how I can be once I start flapping my gums.

Amy and I drove up Thursday for a Saturday race. It’s basically a nine hour drive, very doable in a day. Lots of quality time alone in the car, a rarity these days. She was certainly sick of all of my Austin Powers one liners by the time we got there. I wouldn’t let her watch a movie or take a nap. I needed an audience.

Packet pickup, bike check in, all pre race stuff was normal. I’ll get right to race morning. That’s when it started getting interesting. Setting up my T1 area it started raining. I’m not talking drizzling. RAINING! Then it started POURING. I’m thinking, Riiiiiigggghhhhhtt…… Can we actually race in this? Frick! I actually tapered, carbo loaded and shaved, I cannot, not race.

Sure enough the announcer started preparing everyone for a race delay and then the dreaded announcement came. They were considering amending the race, possibly to a swim, run, swim format……..HUH? NO WAY! The only thing that I sort of know how to do is ride my bike. Hell, been doing it since I was four or five, a hell of a long time. Throw me a bone here. No swim, run, swim, please. Anyway, how would he pull that off? I had a bad feeling that this day was going to be a cluster. About an hour later, the race director took the mic and announced that the race would be run as planned. Ballsy move. I was really impressed with this guy. He said that there would be a mandatory dismount to carry our bikes through some flooded streets but to just be careful and follow the volunteer’s instructions. I had to re-set my brain to competition mode but after a few minutes I was back in the right frame of mind and ready to go.

The swim was a one loop affair for us half ironman-ers. I made a conscious decision to sight more than I normally do. I figured, I may be slow but at least I won’t be slow AND crooked. Sometime during the second half of the swim, I found it really odd that I was swimming amongst a bunch of guys in the wave before me. I actually thought, man these guys in the wave before me, green caps, really suck. Because, if I have made three minutes on them, let’s face it….they suck. When I stood up to exit the water, I checked my watch and it said 34 something….what? Must have been a short course but who cares. One thing is for sure never ask questions about a fast race split.

I hit T1 as hard as I possibly could and got out on the bike ASAP. The first few miles were really slow. Everyone was all bunched up and it was pouring rain. There was standing water everywhere, not to mention the “portage” section. I just took it really easy for the first seven or eight miles. I really had no choice, to not do so would have been very risky. After about a half hour it started spreading out a bit and it was ok to put your head down a little and get to work. I rode with out my power tap and went off of feel and heart rate. I would call this course, sort of hilly. Nothing like Wisconsin or CDA but never flat either. I rode it pretty hard. Mark Miller guessed that if you can ride a 2:30 in Galveston, you probably should ride a 2:40 at Redman. After driving the course with Amy the day before, I figured he had estimated it just right. My last few miles, I noticed that I could basically raise my heart rate at will, with a conscious acceleration but no huge fatigue to my legs. I took this as a good sign. Coming into T2, I just hit my split on my watch but did not look at my time. I did not care. It didn’t matter. I had ridden as hard as I wanted to. They had me at a 2:34, I think.

I tried to slam T2 also but my body parts weren’t following instructions as well as they were in T1. I know that each of you know what I’m talking about. Sock on foot, sock on foot, sock on foot. C’mon man, fricking sock on foot!!!! Finally, thank you. Went out on the run with a predetermined mantra,

“First lap, let it happen. Second lap, make it happen!”

I yanked off my hrm and handed it to Amy within the first mile. I hate running with that thing. She accepted it, with a, “Gross”. What a trooper. Even without the monitor, I could tell that my h.r. was high but I was patient and at about mile three I started loosening up a bit and got a little more comfortable, if that’s possible. Anyway, I was hoping to see 55 or less at my first lap. I think that my watch read 53:45. Soon after that I came up on Amy and the fist pump let her know that I was in the middle of a good day. We had agreed that anything under 5:10 was deserving of fried chicken for dinner and I was thinking that I had a good shot as some KFC. I didn’t really care about my time, I just wanted to run as fast as I could. I tried to pick it up several times within the second lap but was met with a pre-cramp muscle twinge somewhere in my legs, each time. These served as indicators that I was pushing about as hard as I could. Crossed the line with a 1:47 and a total of 5:00:51, I think. Happy with my race but already nervous about Florida.

Made a fool out of myself at KFC and not an ounce of guilt.

Redman is a well run race. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a very professionally run independent.

Cheers, Dodd

Cajun Man crash update

Chuck Henderson fell victim to the treacherous weather conditions during CajunMan last Sunday.
He crashed hard just before a 90 degree right turn and ended up fracturing his right femur, close to his hip.
Charles Steward was kind enough to forgo his vitual first place on the course
and stayed with Chuck until the ambulance arrived.
Chuck underwent surgery earlier this week and seems in good spirits when we spoke with him on the phone.

PRECISION BIKES
likes to wish Chuck a speedy recovery and hope to see him out on the course soon again.

BatonRouge225 Please vote for the obvious...

Should cyclists share local roads with motor vehicles or only use dedicated bike lanes and paths?

Note: This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

It's a no-brainer because it's the law, but not everyone in BR knows that.

There's going to be a cool article on cycling in 225 next month

and I'm hoping the poll overwhelmingly votes to share the road!

Alternative would be to load your bike in the car and drive to a bike lane, ha!
